The Myth pool BIOgraphy

The Mythpool—Artists/Musicians Amie Penwell and Vicente Rodriguez— are emerging from the lab where they’ve been developing their eclectic mash up of alt rock, R&B, and 80s new wave reminiscent of Peter Gabriel, Wendy & Lisa, and Spoon.

It’s no accident that their music sounds like it’s born of an era when early synths and drum loops made recording at home a viable option.

“Those are the sounds we grew up with. And now that those are in the programs on our laptops, it's just made it so fun,” says Rodriguez.

After recording a full-length album (2017’s Windows) and an EP (2013’s Under City Lights) in professional studios as a solo artist, Penwell sensed it was time for something completely new. So she decided to team up with Rodriguez, best known for his drumming work with Chuck Prophet, after meeting at a Notes4Hope benefit concert nine years ago.

Now, instead of relying on a producer, they’re leaning into a DIY ethos to explore what they can create on their own—without time constraints or deadline pressures.

“I had a whole career of depending too much upon how other people were steering the music, production wise,” says Penwell, “I was coming in with finished songs, but never had any money or serious time with another human being to actually make the music I really wanted to make.”

This time, if something doesn't feel right, they can take their time and let ideas gestate.

“It’s allowed me to start to trust this other process that was happening without trying to make it happen in five or six days in a studio,” says Penwell. “We're letting it happen organically.”

On August 14th, The Mythpool will release their debut single, “In It Together,” the first song that appeared out of the ether when they began collaborating. “I had a demo from 2020, and V was like, that song's cool. Let's try that,” recalls Penwell. “We had just a GarageBand loop. As soon as my song went to his loop, it was like: Now we can begin this. Then it just kept going.”

“It felt possible at that moment for us to do something in the apartment,” says Penwell. “We didn't have to go full drum kit at first.

We could work with what we had, even if it was,  a Casio and my voice. Okay, let's start with that. So it was bigger than just that song or that loop. It was more like, Oh, this means that we can do a lot of other things this way, too.”

“I don't usually get a chance to watch people's process, when they're creating in real time,” says Rodriguez. “This was much more deliberate. It was like, what does it wanna be? And having something not work for a year, and be like, it's not quite right. Then watching the final piece kind of sit, you're go, Oh, that was worth a year of waiting. The lesson in patience is huge. Because if you take away the deadlines and you’re really committed to waiting for that feeling, you know you can proceed from there.”

“Each time we started to create on our own terms, after we would go into the studio and go, here's a song, this is what we're gonna do, we’d think: not quite,” says Rodriguez. “We’d come back to the drawing board here and something really cool would happen when it was just us.”

After spending so much of his music career as a hired gun drummer, where his job was finding an answer as fast as possible, Rodriguez feels free of the “time is money” mindset. “Now  we can make this be whatever we want it to be! Instead of finding the answer that’s quickest, we wait for the one that’s best.”

Mythpool’s debut single, “In It Together” will be available on all listening platforms on 8/14/26.
