THE MYTH POOL: MAKING MUSIC WITHOUT A MAP
There’s a certain freedom that comes from making music at home: no clock running, no studio bill accumulating by the hour, no producer waiting for the answer. A song can sit unfinished for a year if it needs to. A Casio can be enough. A GarageBand loop can become the beginning of something neither person expected.
That’s the world Amie Penwell and Vicente Rodriguez have been building as The Myth Pool.
Their music pulls from alt rock, R&B, dance music, and 80s new wave, with traces of Peter Gabriel, Wendy & Lisa, Sade, The Cure, and Spoon. It has the slightly uncanny feeling of something both familiar and newly assembled—early synths and drum machines meeting organic instruments, pop instincts colliding with stranger impulses.
The Myth Pool began, in part, with a question: What happens when two musicians stop trying to make a song fit an existing idea of what it should be?
For Penwell, the question came after years of making records in professional studios. As a solo artist, she recorded King In A Temple (2008) Under City Lights (2012) and Windows (2018), arriving with finished songs but often having limited time and resources to discover what those songs might become.
“I had a whole career of depending too much upon how other people were steering the music, production-wise,” she says. “I was coming in with finished songs, but never had any money or serious time with another human being to actually make the music I really wanted to make.”
Rodriguez brought a different history to the collaboration. Best known for his drumming work with Chuck Prophet, he had spent much of his career as a hired gun—someone whose job was often to walk into a room and find the answer quickly.
The Myth Pool offered the opposite possibility.
“Now it’s like, we can make this be whatever we want it to be!” Rodriguez says. “Instead of finding the answer that’s quickest, we wait for the one that feels best.”
The two first met at a Notes4Hope benefit concert nine years ago. Eventually, Penwell brought Rodriguez a demo.
“I had a demo from 2020, and V was like, that song’s cool. Let’s try that,” Penwell recalls. “We had just a GarageBand loop. As soon as my song went to his loop, it was like: Now we can begin this. Then it just kept going.”
That song became “In It Together,” the first piece of music to emerge from The Myth Pool—and, in some ways, the experiment that made the rest of the project possible.
“It felt possible at that moment for us to do something in the apartment,” Penwell says. “We didn’t have to go full drum kit at first. We could work with what we had, even if it was, like, a Casio and my voice. Okay, let’s start with that.”
What followed was less about productivity than patience. Ideas were allowed to become themselves slowly. Some were abandoned. Others came back months later in a different form.
“I don’t usually get a chance to watch people’s process when they’re creating in real time,” says Rodriguez. “This was much more deliberate for both of us. the question always, what does it want to be?”
“Having something not work for a year, then watching the final piece kind of sit, you’re like, Oh, that was worth a year of waiting. The lesson in patience is huge. Because if you take away the deadlines and you’re really committed to waiting for that feeling, you know you can proceed with confidence from there.”
That patience has become part of the sound itself.
“Each time we started to create on our own terms, after we would go into the studio and go, here’s a song, this is what we’re gonna do, we’d think: not quite,” Rodriguez says. “We’d come back to the drawing board here and something really cool would happen when it was just us.”
The Myth Pool is less a mythology with fixed rules than an invitation to wander around and see what turns up.
What may be the most revealing thing about how Penwell and Rodriguez make music, they don’t seem particularly interested in knowing where they’re going before they get there.
They’re interested in finding out.
